Open Source Software

There are numerous reasons to use Open Source software solutions. we encourage our clients to take advantage of it when it is appropriate for their situation. We aren't zealots though, we realize that there are instances where it just doesn't make sense for a client to use it when another proprietary solution suits their needs more effectively and at a lower cost in time or resources. That's right, it's not always "free" as in beer to use Open Source Solutions. There are associated costs for implementation, maintenance and support. What is free with open source is your business. You are free to use it however you see fit. You are not tied to a specific vendor because they are the only ones with access to the source code to their application. The code is available to all. If the vendor goes out of business with proprietary software, you're stuck. If an open source project ceases to be active, you have the option to hire a consultant versed in the technology to continue to develop and support that application since the source code is available. If the Open Source solution does 99% of what you want it to, you can hire a developer to add in the final 1% to make it do exactly what you want it to. Try that with your typical closed source, proprietary software.
